While you may think you’re settled, you never know what surprises life has in-store for you.
Why is This Important?
Owning a home security system can be a long term commitment. The average contract length is 36 months. What happens if you decide to relocate while still under contract? Will they let you move? Will you be stuck? More than likely you will be beyond your security systems return policy so you will be subject to the “moving policy”. ADT’s Moving Policy
Mover’s Package Guarantee
Certain restrictions apply. To qualify for the special Mover’s Offer, you must be a current or former ADT customer who has had active ADT contract monitored service for two years (24 months), and your ADT account must be in good standing, or have been in good standing when you left ADT. Offer valid for two (2) years following cancellation of ADT service in your prior home. 36-month monitoring contract required at the then-prevailing monthly monitoring rate (24-month in CA). ADT may substitute a comparable home security system. Local permit fees may be required. Satisfactory credit history required. Additional fees required for some services. All relocation credits are only valid toward installation charge of new equipment. Credits may not be applied for any other purpose. Amount of credit is based on length of tenure with ADT; 6-11 months with ADT yields a credit of $100; 12–23 months with ADT yields a credit of $249; 24 months or longer with ADT qualifies you for the special Mover’s Offer. Maximum allowable discount is $349 on any ADT Traditional monitoring service level and $399 on any ADT Pulse service level. 25% discount on valid on installation amounts up to $1,600 (maximum discount not to exceed $400). Total discount not to exceed $749 for Traditional monitoring service level or $799 for an ADT Pulse service level. Offer not applicable to system/services purchased from ADT Authorized Dealer(s). Does not include one-time $25 communication connection fee. Quality Service Plan (QSP) is ADT’s Extended Limited Warranty. 36-month monitoring contract required from $35.99 per month, including QSP. ADT will let you move and they MIGHT give you a credit to cover some of the costs, but more than likely you will come out of pocket.
- Been with ADT for 6-11 months? You MIGHT get a $100 credit toward the cost of your move.
- 12-23 months? You MIGHT get a credit of $249 toward your move.
- Been with ADT longer than 24 months? You MIGHT qualify for the shangri-la of ADT relocation offers, The Mover’s Offer. DUM DUM DUUUMMMM!
To get the Mover’s Offer guarantee you must meet the following criteria.
1. Held an ADT contract for at least two years that was maintained in good standing.
2. The contract can be active or expired so long as it hasn’t been expired for more than 2 years.
3. Be willing to sign a new 36-month agreement (24-month in CA) at the new rate.
4. Be willing to go through another credit check and pass.
5. Oh and if you purchased through an authorized reseller you are out of luck. This deal is for ADT direct customers only.
If you do meet the criteria above, you will get a discount of $349 on any monitoring service level and a 25% discount on installation so long as that discount doesn’t exceed $400. The bottom line? The Mover’s Offer will provide a maximum discount of $749 for ADT contracts and $799 for ADT Pulse contracts.
CPI Security’s Moving Policy
If moving within CPI service area:
CPI will install a security system at the new location based on the current promotional offering. Additional devices beyond those included in the offer may be purchased. An additional fee will be charged if the customer has satisfied less than 24 months.
A default fee of 75% of the remaining agreement (Contract Termination Charge) will be assessed for the remainder of contract terms if customer does not keep CPI at their new location if contract terms have not been fulfilled.
If moving outside of CPI service area:
If the new homeowners at the customer’s residence elect to sign with CPI, the customer is absolved from the remainder of agreement. Otherwise, the customer will be charged a Contract Termination Charge of 75% of the remaining agreement if contract terms have not been fulfilled.
This one’s pretty cut and dry. If you move to an area that they cover (Southeast Region of the US), they will install a new system and you will pay for it. Your fee will be even higher if you move within 24 months of signing the contract.
If you move to an area they do not cover you must either:
A. Talk the new homeowner into taking over your contract.
B. Buyout your contract at 75% of its remaining value.
Let’s do some math magic. Let’s say your contract is 36 months and you move to Colorado a year into your contract. Let’s say you had the basic $29.95 per month contract. The remaining contract value is $718.80 (29.95 x 24). You pay 75% or $539.10 to get out of the contract. Get it? Got it? Good.

All the LifeShield components are portable and can easily be set up and configured in your new place. If your new home happens to be larger than your current home, you can just order more sensors or cameras and install them yourself to make sure you’re protected.

Monitronics’s Moving Policy

A: Monitronics has a flexible move program to fit our customers’ needs. Find the option that works best for you:
Transfer your service to your new home by taking advantage of Monitronics’ Free Move Program.
Arrange for the incoming homeowner to take over your current system and contract.
Transfer your contract to someone else.
Pay off the remaining balance.
They will move you for free. However, depending upon what type of equipment you have, you may be able to move the equipment or you may need new equipment.
Protect America’s Moving Policy
Protect America customers that relocate already have a moving kit. This was include in the initial home security packaging and allows for easy transportation of the Simon XT wireless home security platform. Without assistance, customers can uninstall their wireless home alarm systems for use at another location. If issues arise, trained technicians from Protect America are waiting to provide the appropriate assistance.
Protect America will let you move for free. Save the original packaging as it includes a mover’s kit.
SimpliSafe’s Moving Policy
Easy to take with you when you move to your next dream house (or leave the suburbs for the city).
You can move at any time for free. As SimpliSafe is a no contract option, you can even cancel if you prefer.
Vector’s Moving Policy
Vector Security, we offer a free home automation package and percentage discount off additional devices to customers who are relocating. Your existing system remains installed in your current home. Contact your security provider at least eight weeks before your move. This will give you both ample time to coordinate logistics. No home is move-in ready without a home security system! Be protected from night one by squared everything away before the move.
I’m not sure but multiple user reviews state moving is expensive. If you move to an area not covered by Vector you will be asked to buyout your remaining contract value. If you move to a new area and take the system with you, more than likely you will come out of pocket.

If you choose to remain under your current agreement, you will be charged a $99 Move Fee. If you have been a customer for less than a year, a $99 Move Fee will be charged. Additional charges will apply for upgraded equipment or additional points of protection.
If the new owners of your home are interested in activating a Vivint system, you could be eligible to receive a referral credit.
The cost depends upon how long you’ve been a customer.
- Been a customer for 12 months+? If you sign a new contract with Vivint, you can move for no cost.
- Been a customer for 12 months+ but DON’T want to sign a new contract? Moving will cost $99.
- Been a customer for less than 12 months? Moving will cost $99.
