Security System Returns

Can You Return Your Security System?

Buying a home security system is a commitment. Most companies require that you sign a 36-month contract. Who wants to be stuck with something they hate for 3 years? Not me. And a monthly payment to boot? Writing a check every month for something you hate is like a thorn in the side. This is why it’s so important to find a home security company that provides a generous trial or return period. Below is information on the return policies for several top home security companies.

ADT’s Return Policy Has a Catch

60 Days - ish

In their own words, “If during the six months following installation we are unable to resolve any installation/service-related concern, we will refund the installation charge and/or any monitoring fees paid. Subject to the terms and conditions of the Residential Services Contract between you and ADT Security Services.”

What does this mean? They will only let you return something if there is an issue with your service and they can’t fix it. Otherwise, too bad Charlie.

AT&T’s Digital Life Return Policy

14 Days

In their own words, “Device Return Period – Consumers/Individual Responsibility Users – You have 14 days after purchase (or shipping date, if equipment is shipped) to return or exchange your device. ”

What does this mean? You can return within 14 days and you will receive a full refund less a restocking fee. For simple security the restocking fee is $50. For smart security the restocking fee is $99. If you only have add-on packages you will pay a $25 restocking fee for each package. This includes video, energy, door, water, and control.

Comcast’s XFINITY Home Return Policy

30 Days

In their own words, “We will give you a 30-day, money-back guarantee. If you’re not satisfied with our TV, Internet, Voice or Home services and wish to cancel for any reason, you can do so in the first 30 days and get your money back. Simply return all equipment in good working order and we’ll refund the monthly recurring fee for your first 30 days of service, any charges you paid for standard installation and any Home Secure and Control equipment purchased.”

What does this mean? You have 30 days. Make the most of them!

Cox Communications’ Home Security Return Policy

30 Days

In their own words, “30-Day Cancellation Period. You may cancel this Agreement or cancel or downgrade any or all of the Service(s) you receive for any reason and without incurring an ETF (early termination fee) by notifying the customer service department of your local Cox office of your intention to cancel during the first thirty (30) days of the Term. See the enclosed bill statement for the telephone number of your local Cox office. You will be responsible for a prorated portion of the monthly recurring fees for the PLG Services and all other charges and fees that you incur prior to cancellation of this Agreement or your cancellation or downgrade of any PLG Service(s).”

What does this mean? You have 30 days but it sounds like you won’t get all of your money back. They will keep a prorated portion of your monthly payment and maybe more.

Frontpoint Home Security Return Policy

30 Days

In their own words, “30-day, risk-free trial period means you have 30 days to return your system for any reason and receive a full refund. This doesn’t mean the system is free for the first 30 days, it means that you have 30 days to try the system out and see how you like it. You do need to purchase the system, however, if you decide the system isn’t for you, you can return it (return shipping is free) for a full refund.”

What does this mean? You have a 30 day risk free trial.

LifeShield Home Security Return Policy

7 Days

In their own words, “You can return the System for any reason and cancel this Contract within 7 days after the System is installed or activated. If you do not install or activate the System within thirty (30) calendar days of your order, you will conclusively be deemed to have accepted our System, and this Contract will continue in force. Once you active your system you will enter a 7-day practice period. After the 7-day practice period, the ‘not monitored’ notification on your console will disappear and your system will be fully monitored. We are not obliged to issue an RMA after thirty (30) calendar days after you order. You must return the products to our warehouse within twenty (20) calendar days of the issuance of the RMA. Accessory products purchased with a kit or separately from a kit are also subject to return policies listed here. Returns must be in the original box and with all parts and manuals in original resalable condition, along with a copy of your purchase receipt. A $50 restocking fee and shipping charges will be deducted from the amount refunded. Returns must be postmarked by and received in our warehouse within 20 calendar days of the issuance of the RMA number. All products must be packed in the original, unmarked packaging including any accessories, manuals, stickers, signs, documentation and registration that shipped with the product, and the products must be in new, resalable condition. Incomplete, missing or damaged products not in resalable condition or products not meeting the return guidelines outlined in your product/service agreement will be subject to MSRP charges. No returns will be accepted with an RMA number. Please allow an estimated 14 calendar days after receipt of your package for refunds to be credited to the original purchasing credit card.”

What does this mean? 7 days and even then there is a $50 restocking fee and more charges.

Link Interactive Return Policy

30 Days

In their own words, “Every system we sell is backed with a 30-day money back guarantee…”

What does this mean? You have a 30 day risk free trial.

LiveWatch Return Policy

365 Days

In their own words, “Return your equipment for a full refund within the 1st year, and cancel your service at anytime with no termination fee – no questions asked.”

What does this mean? There is conflicting information on the LiveWatch website which makes this confusing. This source says you can return equipment within a year, this source says 45 days or 90 days. I would check with LiveWatch first but in general I think the 365 day return policy is more up-to-date than the other information found on their website.

Protect America’s Return Policy

14 Days

In their own words, “Once you receive your system, if you would like to cancel the agreement and return the system to us, you must follow our cancellation procedures as stated in the agreement. Our Agreement Cancellation policy is as follows: customers may cancel their Agreement by returning the Equipment within fourteen (14) days of the original shipment date. The return package must be postmarked within fourteen (14) days of the original shipment date and returned postage paid to: 3800 Quick Hill Road; Building 1-100; Austin, TX 78728. The Agreement cannot be cancelled until all of the equipment is received at Protect America, Inc. Customer may be required to provide proof of delivery. A $79.00 restocking fee will be charged against the method of payment provided at the time of sale.”

What does this mean? You have 14 days and you better put it in writing. Even then, be prepared to lose $79 on the deal.

SafeTouch Security Return Policy

30 Days-ish

In their own words, “30-day money-back guarantee – If we can’t resolve any equipment or installation issues within the first 30 days, we’ll gladly refund your money.”

What does this mean? Similar to ADT, they will only refund your money if you have issues they can’t fix.

SimpliSafe Security Return Policy

60 Days

In their own words, “SimpliSafe has a 60 day money back guarantee, so we are happy to refund your money. (When we say money back – we mean it!) We will even pay to ship the wireless security system back to us. All you need to do is call us at 1-888-95-SIMPLI (957-4675) and we will walk you through how to return the system to us.”

What does this mean? 60 days. Easy peasy.

Vivint Security Return Policy

3 Days

In their own words, “Our cancellation policy differs depending on your location: United States – 3 days after installation. Puerto Rico – 3 days after installation. Alaska – 5 days after installation. New York – 3 days after installation for the standard agreement; 7 days after installation for the Panic Pendant addendum. Canada – 10 days after installation. Seniors (70+ years old) – 30 days after installation”

What does this mean? More than like you have 3 days unless you live in Alaska, Canada, or you’re over 70 years old. If you are moving, you will be subject to their moving policy. This is no different than any of the other companies. They all have separate return and moving policies.
